Elio|Interactive Storytelling Research & Design for BSD studio

OVERVIEW
Strategy By Design is an Italian company based in Milan & Florence. As part of my Master's degree I have done a research internship, exploring interactive methods.

Matters.srl
Matters is a BSD start-up focused on conversational storytelling for user research by collecting qualitative data from users with a conversational storytelling web app, engage people with generative storytelling: data-driven informative and interactive dashboard , and using data analytics for building user experience knowledge and foster product and service innovation.
Matters is a responsive web platform and a data-driven informative and interactive dashboard for Interactive and personalized storytelling through messaging collected qualitative and quantitative data from users with conversational storytelling web app.Understanding consumer and customer demand.
Psycho-social research and participatory design methods have been applied for its ideation and development: user stories, planning flows and conversational interfaces have been developed for supporting psychosocial analysis of behaviors, attitudes, sense of involvement and moral
values.
Personal Storytelling serves as the background of an interactive dialogue with the MATTERS BOT that evolves as the user tells himself.
The user’s responses go to a custom database allowing multifaceted analysis in order to investigate collective, social and cognitive dimensions of the user experience.

OLD DESIGN & FLOW ( CHAT ONLY)
CHALLENGES & BRIEF
The scope of the short project was concentrating on creating interactive storytelling for Elio ( the system's bot ) that will be more than a chat-only-based interaction and will help to achieve the project's goal which is to collect data from users in an engaging way and during the interactive conversation. The case-scenario that was chosen is an office that wants to evaluate the safety of its employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Offices in Italy during the pandemic
The outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has resulted in a worldwide pandemic. In Italy, where the outbreak of COVID-19 has been extremely severe, the Government implemented a number of emergency measures, including the closure of schools, universities, gyms, museums and clubs, in addition to more severe restrictions on business, commercial and leisure activities in the Italian territory.Smart working continues to be the recommended mode of performing working activities. The simplified procedure (i.e. no need of detailed individual agreement) has been extended until 31 March 2021.
The H&S Protocol provides that companies in breach of health and safety regulations may be subject to an immediate suspension of their commercial license. As such, the companies must be aware of and take appropriate action in respect of their obligations arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Smart working agreements are still recommended in all Italian regions, especially in red areas, provided that such working mode may still be profitable.
1.The body temperature of employees should be measured before they enter company premises. Employees who have a body temperature higher than 37.5 C° are not permitted access to corporate premises. Restrictions on the collection and processing of this data are outlined further below.
2.Employers should opt for voice calls or video conferences where possible (especially in red areas).
3.Any scheduled fairs, conferences, events, or conventions of whatever nature must be delayed, in addition to any meetings due to be attended by physicians or people in charge of public services.
4.Employers must restrict access to common areas such as canteens, relaxation areas, coffee rooms, and smoking areas. The number of people who can have access to such areas must be limited and a "security distance" of at least one meter must be ensured among people standing in the same room. Also, people must wear face masks.

SKETCHES & IDEATION AND DEMOGRAPHICS
KEY INSIGHTS
-The demographic on the end-users ( the employees ) is wide mainly around 25-40 with around 42% women and 56% men ( 2% other )
- Elio -the character-presenter of the system-app should be genderless.
-Because the information that is being collected is delicate it should be anonymous and we should address the users in an emphatic and non-judgmental way
- It should be mobile first- even if not native.

INTERACTIVE storytelling building blocks
intro stage
In which Elio is introducing itself to the users and should make them feel comfortable
Hypothesis
Elio is presenting the user moral dilemma concerning office life during the pandemic, it is a short and engaging story that will help the bot to collect data and in an emphatic way. In this narrative, I chose to present and to
empathize the difficulties in wearing a mask in-office.
narrative
An emphatic conversation combining chat and narrative storytelling: data collecting stage. after presenting the dilemma the users are being asked to address it in their daily situation.
ENGAGEMENT
After collecting data the bot is using the data to create further interaction, empathies, and education.
First- the bot will respond and offer a solution (educate) by using feedback narrative.
We conclude the story and create a final dialog / interaction with the user
I have also examine further interactive storytelling method such as interaction as story
An an illustrated multiple selection

In addition this project aimed for:
+ Creating data visualization with basic shapes and colors
+ Transforming quantitative and qualitative data to visual
   representation.
+ Creating an
emotional sphere
This project is in beta right now ( started on 8th of March 2021 )
